Whiskey is one of America’s favorite spirits. Whether you prefer it straight, on the rocks, or in a mixed drink, there’s no denying the pleasant flavor and mellow notes of a good whiskey. In winter, a nice nip of whiskey warms the belly and the spirit, and though most people don’t associate whiskey with hot weather, there are some great summertime cocktails made with whiskey that are quite refreshing and delicious to say the least.

1. Whiskey Sour
This classic drink is a simple favorite on a hot day. Good American whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and just a touch of sugar to round out the flavors of this delightfully sweet and sour cocktail.
What You Will Need
- 1 ½ oz Bourbon
- ¾ oz Fresh lemon juice
- ¾ oz Simple syrup
- 1 Cherry
To prepare add all the ingredients to a shaker filled with ice and shake well for about 10 seconds. Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with a cherry and lemon wedge.
2. Lynchburg Lemonade
The Lynchburg Lemonade is named after Lynchburg, Tennessee, the hometown of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery and it remains one of the most popular mixed drinks of Tennessee to this day.
The drink is a semi-sweet, semi-tart, and very refreshing cocktail that is perfect on a hot afternoon
What You Will Need
- 1 ½ oz Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey
- 1 oz triple sec
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 4 oz lemon-lime soda
To mix up an authentic Lynchburg lemonade. Pour the whiskey, triple sec, and sour mix into a collins glass filled with ice. Top with soda and Stir well.
3. The New Old-Fashioned
The fruits of the summer make this delicious cocktail a great twist on the classic Old-Fashioned.
You’ll want to seek out the ripest peaches and the juiciest blackberries at your local market.
What You Will Need
- 1 tablespoon simple syrup
- 5 dashes of bitters
- 2 ½ oz Bourbon
- 2 peach slices
- 2 blackberries
- Splash of sparkling water
To prepare this fantastic cocktail, Muddle the simple syrup, bitters and 1 peach slice in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass. Add the bourbon, ice cubes, 1 peach slice, the blackberries, and sparkling water. Stir well to mix.
4. Kentucky Kiss
This deliciously sweet and tart drink features bourbon and fresh strawberry puree. Don’t be fooled by the “girlyness” of this drink fellas. It packs a punch.
What You WIll Need
- 2 oz. Bourbon
- 1 oz. Amaretto
- 1 oz. Strawberry Puree
- 1 oz. Lime Juice
- 1 oz. Simple Syrup
To prepare this tantalizingly sweet cocktail, combine the ingredients in a mixer with ice and shake well. Double Strain into a tall glass filled with ice and garnish with a strawberry.
5. Mint Julep
The Mint Julep is a bourbon cocktail that is easy to make. Also the signature drink of the Kentucky Derby, this is one whiskey drink you need to try.
- 10 mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
- 1 1/2 teaspoons superfine sugar
- Seltzer water
- Crushed ice
- 2 1/2 ounces Kentucky bourbon whiskey
Place the mint leaves in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass and top with the sugar. Muddle these together until the leaves begin to break down. Add a splash of seltzer water, fill the glass 3/4 full with crushed ice, and add the bourbon. Top with another splash of seltzer, stir, and garnish with a sprig of mint.
6. Northern Harvest Buck
Canadian whisky is a category that is gaining popularity among whiskey drinkers in the U.S. and elsewhere. This take on the Whiskey Ginger (a.k.a the Irish Buck) adds a squeeze of lime and some bitters, which complement the slightly spicy but smooth qualities of this spirit.
- 1 ½ oz Crown Royal Northern Harvest rye
- ¾ oz Fresh-squeezed lime juice
- 3 oz Ginger beer
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
To mix this refreshing cocktail, combine the rye and lime juice in a shaker with ice, and shake well. Strain into a highball glass over ice and add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters. Top with ginger beer and garnish with a lemon wheel and mint sprig.
These great cocktails are great for entertaining guests, or even just yourself. When it gets to the hottest days of summer, sometimes it’s too unbearably hot to do anything but relax on the deck.
